Backgammon Rules in Short
New to the game, or need a refresher on the backgammon rules? Here is the whole game in six lines:
- Setup: each player has 15 checkers — two on the 24-point, five on the 13-point, three on the 8-point and five on the 6-point.
- Moving: roll two dice and move checkers toward your home board. Each die is a separate move; doubles are played four times.
- Blocking: a point held by two or more opposing checkers is closed to you.
- Hitting: land on a lone checker (a blot) and it goes to the bar. It must re-enter in the opponent's home board before they move anything else.
- Doubling cube: before your roll you may offer to double the stakes. Your opponent takes and plays on, or drops and loses the current value.
- Bearing off: once all 15 checkers reach your home board you remove them. First player to bear off all 15 wins — double for a gammon, triple for a backgammon.
